10 Best Shortwave Radios 2026 in the United States

The Midland ER310 is a versatile emergency shortwave radio designed with multiple power options that make it very reliable during power outages or outdoor adventures. It supports AM/FM and NOAA weather bands, with an automatic weather scan and alert feature that keeps you updated on severe weather conditions. Its three power sources—solar panel, hand crank, and rechargeable battery—offer flexibility, ensuring the radio stays powered without needing frequent battery replacements.

The built-in flashlight with an SOS beacon adds safety value, and an ultrasonic dog whistle can aid rescue efforts, which are thoughtful extras for emergencies. Portability is decent; at around 1 pound and compact size, it's easy to carry but not pocket-sized. The radio's tuning method is basic AM/FM, which is straightforward but lacks the fine digital tuning found in some other radios, so selectivity and sensitivity might be average compared to higher-end models.

It includes a USB port to charge external devices, which is handy but will drain its battery faster if used often. One limitation is the antenna type; it has a built-in antenna suitable for general listening but may struggle with weak or distant signals compared to radios with extendable or external antennas. The ER310 is an excellent choice for users seeking a dependable emergency radio with practical extras, good weather band support, and easy power recharge options, although audiophiles or those needing advanced shortwave features might find it somewhat basic.

The ICOM 7300 02 is a powerful and modern shortwave radio that offers excellent frequency coverage, spanning from 0.030 to 74.8 MHz. Its direct sampling receiver type generally provides good sensitivity and selectivity, enabling it to pick up weak signals clearly while filtering out unwanted noise. With a strong 100-watt output power and support for AM, FM, and SSB tuning, it is versatile enough for various listening needs, including amateur radio use.

The radio includes an easy-to-read LCD display and comes with a hand microphone and installation hardware, making setup straightforward. Although it weighs 8.4 pounds, its compact size (about 9.4 inches square and 3.7 inches high) enhances portability, though it is best suited for stationary use rather than frequent travel. Some limitations include the lack of smart home compatibility and unspecified details about built-in antenna quality, so users may prefer an external antenna for improved reception.

Built-in automatic features contribute to smoother operation for users less familiar with tuning. This radio suits hobbyists and serious shortwave listeners seeking a robust, reliable device with advanced capabilities in a reasonably compact form.

The C. Crane CC Skywave 2 is a versatile and compact shortwave radio, a great choice for travelers and emergency preparedness enthusiasts. It covers a wide range of frequencies, including AM, FM, shortwave, NOAA weather band, and VHF aviation, making it ideal for tuning into local broadcasts and emergency updates. Its strong sensitivity and selectivity are enhanced by multiple bandwidth settings, ensuring clear reception across all bands. This radio is designed with portability in mind, weighing just 6 ounces and featuring a compact design, which makes it easy to carry around.

Tuning is user-friendly with options for direct frequency entry, auto-scan, and a rotary knob for volume and tuning, offering both fast and fine adjustments. The radio boasts 400 memory presets, including 10 dedicated for aviation, catering to those interested in aviation frequencies. The inclusion of a shortwave antenna jack is a nice touch for those wanting to boost reception with an external antenna.

Additional features include a built-in clock with alarm functions, a lighted LCD display, stereo headphone jack, and a fold-out stand for convenience. It operates on two AA batteries, promising up to 70 hours of run time using earbuds or 60 hours with the built-in speaker. While the radio excels in portability and functionality, the absence of included batteries and the optional AC adapter might be minor inconveniences for some users. The CC Skywave 2 provides a robust set of features ideal for emergency situations and travel, with its durable build and reliable performance making it a solid option for those who appreciate staying connected through traditional radio means.
